Research Interests:<\/strong>\r\nMy lab studies the genetic and epigenetic basis of schizophrenia, focusing on cognitive\r\ndysfunction and glutamate abnormalities. We are interested in question such as: How\r\ndoes the genetic background and environmental factors interact to create susceptibility\r\nto psychiatric illness? How does glutamate release in the hippocampus affect other\r\nneurotransmitter systems, e.g., dopamine and endocannabinoids? Can glutamate-\r\nbased medications reverse behavioral abnormalities in rodent models of schizophrenia-\r\nlike behavior?\r\nIn addition, we are interested in the epigenetic mechanisms underlying\r\ntransgenerational transmission of stress. We have shown that stress can leave its mark\r\non offspring up to 2 generations forward, and have evidence for changes in germ line\r\ncells that may be responsible for this phenomenon. We study female rodents, and are\r\nparticularly interested in stress during adolescence.\r\nWe use behavioral, molecular, chemogenetic and immunohistochemical tools to\r\naddress our research questions.<\/p>\r\n
